FAQ Lawn Questions and Answers

We see lots of problems time and again. Here are a few of the most common questions that we receive and the answer we usually give. However, if you have a question that isn't covered here, please take a minute and use our simple online contact form to ask away. We'll try to get you an answer as quickly as possible.

What is the best height to mow my grass?
Most grasses here in Oklahoma should be cut to a height of 2.5" - 3"

Should I bag my lawn clippings?
As long as you're only cutting 1/3 of the total length of the blade at one time, there's no need to bag your clippings. However, if the grass is wet when you mow (not recommended) then it might be better to bag your clippings. Turfgrass blades are actually about 90 percent water and so they decompose quickly, adding additional organic matter to the soil.

How often should I sharpen my mower's blade?
It should be sharpened at least once at the beginning of the mowing season. After that you can figure having it sharpened after about 16 - 24 hours of mowing. You might want to consider having sevral mower blades on hand so you can swap them without any problem during the season.

How much water does my lawn need every week?
Almost all turfgrasses require about 1" of water every week during the growing season. If it gets more than that, it's usually no problem. Less than 1" for one week is also no problem if it gets that 1" the following week. When turfgrass doesn't get that 1" of water each week, it begins to go dormant. Extended periods of inadequate rainfall could cause widespread damage to a lawn.
